Thank you for striving for excellence and (my second favorite phrase) “transcending mediocrity”. Chamber and Concert choirs demonstrated the value of hard work (sometimes “trying harder”) and focus on preparation. I could not have been prouder of your performance of each piece tonight. At times I found myself listening as an audience member – just taking it all in. The soloists/duets and four tenors did a fabulous job!!! Wow.

The culminating finale was incredible. I was so taken by “Storm” in addition to seeing all the past alums, that I forgot to speak about my awesome Seniors! So I will just have to do that here.

First of all, thank you for your gestures of appreciation – cool cards, yummy chocolates and beautiful (my favortites!) flowers. Concert seniors, I don’t know if you are aware, but I collect angels! Your gift is beautiful and extra special because it came from you. Thank you. Chamber seniors - a Broncos blanket!!!! I cannot wait to cuddle up in it while watching my Broncos make their way to the Super Bowl next year. It is a perfect remembrance of my 2012 Chamber seniors. Thank you.

Chamber Seniors: My gratitude for each of you is unique because your individual contribution has made such an impression on me. From the veterans to the first year newbies, I am amazed at how each of you rose to and even surpassed the high standard I set before you. Jon and Pat, thank you for sharing your voices with us for this one year. Your contribution was immense – please know that I have great regard for your abillity to jump in and hit the ground running!! Hunter, I am so glad you returned to Chamber! Thank you for making the decision to finish your senior year with us. Teresa, Tiana, Cherelle and Nicole, I have enjoyed watching each one of you blossom into not only fine musicians, but fine young women. Thank you SO MUCH for your dedication to choir over the years. You have shared how much you have been inspired over the years in choir, but that inspiration goes both ways! I am so proud of each of you. I can’t imagine next year without you.

Concert Choir: Cherelle, thank you for your example in concert choir, your leadership and unique ability to inspire all the concert choir members. Samantha, I can’t believe you are a senior! I still have this feeling that I will walk into choir next year and you’ll be sitting there ready to sing! Thank you for your dedication to choir over the years. Carrissa and Felicia, even though you are “late arrivals”, I value you both so much. Thank you for taking the chance on concert choir. I hope you enjoyed it! Garet, I think you already know how grateful I was for your presence in concert choir two years ago, but when I saw you were back this year, I was overjoyed! Thank you very much for sharing your awesome voice with us.

Thank you for representing THS Music with pride at the TEA Retirement Banquet last night. Your performance was strong and a good indicator of what is to come next Thursday for your Farewell Concert! Please review your music daily. Sopranos and Altos – be fully prepared to sing Asikha Thali on Monday night. We will focus on Asikha Thali and Storm Is Passing Over at the beginning of class, then sing through the full program twice (if time allows).

Important Concert Update

I have decided to substitute The Storm Is Passing Over for Keep Your Lamps. All practice files, performance file and pdf of the music will be posted to Charms. Usually, the last combined choir song is open to all THS Choir alums. It is an easy song to learn – just look it over before Monday. Concert Choir, I will be teaching it to you on Thursday.

Chamber Choir: Thursday, May 17th, 7:30 p.m. at The Cornucopia. Arrive warmed up and in uniform. Please look over Set Me As A Seal, No Mirrors and I Hear A Voice A-Prayin’ to be sure they are ready for performance. Performance should be around 8:00 p.m. You will easily be finished by 8:30 p.m.

Concert Choir: Spend some time working on The Prayer – needs to be fully memorized on Thursday. Song for the Mira lyrics also need attention.

SENIOR CHOIR MEMBERS: It is YOUR responsibility to practice Always There. We will go over it in concert choir class on Friday and the last 15 minutes of Chamber Choir on Monday. If you do not have the music, please pick it up asap.

Audition results and important updates

Chamber Choir: Be sure to make note of all upcoming performances (see calendar or previous updated post for dates/times). Please review your part for I Hear A Voice A-Prayin’ so we can sing through it on Monday. I would like to include it in the TEA and possibly the Awards Night performances. Have Keep Your Lamps ready for Monday’s class (you may use music on Monday, but be memorized for the 21st). Next Monday, I would like to run through all other concert pieces fully memorized at performance level. Asikha Thali and The Prayer need extra attention.

I didn’t specify Soprano split for Famine Song on the voice assignments sheet. Sop 1 – Nicole and Michaela; Sop 2 - Casey, Cherelle, Sarah and Katie.

Concert Choir: Song for the Mira needs attention – be sure to spend extra time practicing! I need everyone confident on their part before accompaniment is added on Monday. Our class time over the next two weeks is going to be focused on expressing your music through projection, dynamics and diction. Be prepared!

Auditions:

I was very impressed with the quality of all solo/duet auditions. Thank you for investing the preparation time to ensure a strong audition. I’m already looking at music for next year to feature our outstanding singers!

Congratulations to those selected. Now it is your responsibility to honor the solo/duet you received – be fully prepared/memorized as soon as possible.

Choir Updates

Concert Choir: For those interested in auditioning for the Song for the Mira or What A Wonderful World solos, please be prepared. If extra help is needed, stop by during lunch. All Concert Choir pieces are coming along very nicely – keep striving to improve projection.

Chamber Choir: Thank you for a productive class last night. With O NataLux off the program, I expect all the other pieces to come together quickly…more time to focus on style, phrasing, diction, interpretation, etc.

Famine Song Duet: top part – Felice, bottom part – Stephanie.

Today, I posted a new file on Charms that should help those of you interested in auditioning for the City Called Heaven solo (accompaniment only). I’ll do the same tomorrow for those preparing the Prayer duet.

Mark your calendar…UPDATED INFORMATION BELOW.

Thursday, May 17th - Perform for Torrington Education Association Retirement Banquet at The Cornucopia. Arrive warmed up and in uniform at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Thursday, May 24th - Farewell Concert at The Warner Theatre. Warm up on your own. Be in uniform and ready to sing at 6:20 p.m. so we can run through the combined pieces quickly. Seniors, don’t forget to pick up a carnation.

Thursday, May 31st - Perform National Anthem and another song (TBA) at THS Awards Night. Meet in Choir room at 6:15 PM sharp! Awards Night begins at 6:30. Once we are finished singing, you may leave or sit with the students if receiving an award/recognition.

Graduation: Sing National Anthem – in concert uniform (Seniors in cap and gown, of course!). Chamber Choir members (not graduates) meet in Warner lobby at 5:40 PM

The concert will be here before we know it! Let’s ensure the final concert performance of the year is memorable for you, your family, friends, and especially for our graduating Seniors. Both choirs have great potential for an outstanding performance. Know your part.

To assist in your preparation, I have posted ”Music Minus One” files in the Recording Studio on CHARMS. The accompaniment files will be minus your part. This type of practice tool is challenging and effective. Let me know if you have questions or problems with the files.

Solo Auditions:

Famine Song Duet (Chamber) – Monday, April 30th. Audition individually (I will choose someone to sing the other part) or audition as a duet (you choose your duet partner).

City Called Heaven Solo (Chamber) – Monday, May 7th

Preparation / Memorization Deadlines – UPDATED.

Write the following dates on each of your pieces. The preparation timeline is short for the May concert. Practice and memorize your part sooner rather than later. Can’t wait to hear these pieces come to life!

CHAMBER CHOIR: Stand By Me 4-16 / 4-23 ; City Called Heaven 4-23 / 4-30; Famine Song 4-23 / 5-7; Asikha Thali 4-30 / 5-7; The Prayer 4-30 / 5-7; O Nata Lux 4-30 / 5-14. Get an early start on O Nata Lux. This piece requires plenty of consistent practice over the next few weeks. Make it a priority to set aside practice time throughout the week.

CONCERT CHOIR: Stand By Me 4-19 / 4-26; Keep Your Lamps 4-26 / 4-30; What A Wonderful World 4-26 / 5-3; The Prayer 5-3 / 5-10; Song for the Mira 5-3 / 5-17.
